Description:
The Ahar Dam was constructed on the Ahar river close to the city of Ahar, northeast of Tabriz. The Dam was a part of a multi- purpose project for irrigation, water supply and flood control. The project consisted of a 75 m high earthfill dam with a crest length of 350 m. This required approximately 420,000 m³ of excavation, about 1,900,000 m³ of embankment and an impervious central core. Diversion during construction period was done by means of a tunnel, which at completion of the dam was used as the intake for the bottom outlet. The dam’s spillway was designed for a maximum flow of approx. 2000 m³/s.
